What is GST?

GST is an indirect tax levied on most goods and services sold for domestic consumption within India. 

It is paid by end consumers but is remitted to the government by the businesses selling the goods and services.

Goods and Services Tax, popularly known as GST, was launched on the 1st of July, 2017. It replaced all indirect taxes levied on goods and services by the Central and State governments

What are the modes available with Bank for making GST payments?

Payment of GST can be made through any of the below mentioned modes of payment:

a. Net Banking

b. Cash

c. Cheque

d. DD

e. RTGS/NEFT

f. Credit Card/Debit Card/UPI

How to make GST payments through Kotak Net Banking on the GSTN website?

To make online GST payments through Net Banking, the taxpayer needs to visit www.gst.gov.in. Detailed steps for making this payment are given below:

1. Visit the GST portal at www.gst.gov.in

2. Log in with GSTN credentials or continue in the non-login section

3. Click on Services >> Payments >> Create Challan

4. Enter the GST amount under various sub-heads as applicable

5. Select E-Payment mode >> click on Generate Challan

6. Select Kotak Mahindra Bank under Net Banking

7. Accept Terms & Conditions >> Click on Make Payment

>>> Customer will be redirected to the Kotak Net Banking page <<<


1. Enter login credentials on the Kotak Net Banking login page

2. Enter the Dynamic Access Code and click on Secure Login

3. Select the account to be debited and rule ID (applicable in case of maker checker workflow) and click on Proceed

4. View and verify all the details and click on Make Payments

5. Once the transaction is completed, the customer will be redirected to the GSTN portal. (In the case of maker checker workflow, the transaction will be submitted to the checker for authorisation)

Note: For corporate customers having a maker checker workflow in their account, the transaction will be sent to the mapped authoriser as per the authorisation matrix and will be completed only after the final authoriser has approved the transaction.

How to make GST payment through Kotak Payment gateway (CC/DC/UPI) on the GSTN website?

To make online GST payment through CC/DC/UPI the taxpayer needs to visit www.gst.gov.in. Detailed steps for making this payment are given below:

1. Visit the GST portal at www.gst.gov.in

2. Log in with GSTN credentials or continue in Non-Login section

3. Click on Services >> Payments >> Create Challan

4. Enter the GST amount under various sub-heads as applicable

5. Select E-Payment mode >> click on Generate Challan

6. Select Credit Card/Debit Card/UPI under mode of E-payment

7. Select Kotak Mahindra Bank as Payment Gateway

8. Accept Terms & Conditions >> click on Make Payment

How to make GST payment through Kotak Bank if Net Banking is not activated?

If a taxpayer does not have a Net Banking facility activated for their account, they can also make GST payments through various offline modes of payment by creating a challan on www.gst.gov.in  and walking into their nearest Kotak Mahindra Bank Branch to complete the payment.

What is CPIN (Challan Reference Number)?

“CPIN” means Common Portal Identification Number, which is a 14-digit (YYMMDD followed by 08-digit sequence number) and created by GSTN on successful generation of challan form.

What is CIN (Challan Identification Number)?

CIN stands for Challan Identification Number. It is a 17-digit number with a 14-digit CPIN plus a 3-digit Bank Code (KKBK).

CIN is generated by the authorized banks, when the payment is received by them and credited to the relevant government entities.

Challan Identification Number (CIN) i.e. CRN + Bank Code

What is the validity of a challan?

Validity of a challan is 15 calendar days from the challan’s date of issue, i.e. if CRN is generated on 1st April, then it will remain valid until 15th April, and from 16th April the status of the CRN will change to Expired.

In case of payment through Cheque, if the Payment Instrument (Clearing) is presented by the taxpayer with the Authorized Bank on or before the Valid Till date, then the Challan Valid Till date will get extended for a further 90 days.

Can a taxpayer pay GST through cash? Is there any limit on cash transactions allowed?

Yes, taxpayers can pay GST in cash by paying at the Bank. However, tax payment through cash is limited to a maximum amount of ₹10,000 per Challan Form.

What is the procedure to make GST payments via offline mode?

For making GST payments through an offline mode of payment while generating Challan Form (CPIN), the taxpayer needs to select the bank (Kotak) from the list of Authorized Banks and then select the preferred instrument type (cash/cheque/DD).

After the generation of the Challan Form, the taxpayer needs to carry printed and signed copies of the Challan Form at the branch of the selected Authorized Bank (Kotak Bank) along with the selected payment Instruments.

Is it possible to deposit many challans with a single cheque?

No, only a single challan will be accepted against a single cheque.

Is there a cut-off timing for making GST payments through e-payment/ Net Banking?

GST payments via e-payment/net banking modes of payment do not have a specific cut-off time. This mode of payment is available 24*7 for the customer (taxpayers) to make their GST payments.

Is there any cut-off timing for making GST payments through any of the OTC (Over the counter – Cash, Cheque, and DD) modes of payment at Kotak Bank branches?

  • The cut-off time for making GST payments at branches through cash & transfer cheque is the existing branch timing at each location.

  • The cut-off time for making GST payments through a clearing cheque (cheque of any bank other than Kotak Mahindra Bank) is as per the existing branch timings of a particular branch to accept a clearing cheque. Any GST payment through clearing cheques received after the existing cut-off of a particular branch on a particular day will be processed on the next working day.
  • The upper limit for making GST payment through OTC, as per government regulations, is Rs.10,000 only.

Can I make a GST payment on a bank holiday?

Net Banking/e-payment mode for GST payments is available 24*7. One can make GST payments through this mode even on bank holidays.

GST payment through OTC modes (Cash/cheque/DD) can be done on bank working days only.

What to do if my challan has expired?

You can create a new challan from the GSTN website and complete your payment through any of the available modes of payment.

How can I be sure if my GST payment has been completed?

You will get a payment acknowledgment slip on screen after completing the GST payment through Net Banking and the same can be downloaded. A paid challan copy can also be downloaded from the GSTN website once the payment is successfully completed.

For GST payment through Cash, Transfer Cheques and DD, please ensure to collect the acknowledgement slip from the branch officials. A paid challan copy will also be available on the GSTN website for download.

For clearing cheque, the paid challan copy will be generated on the GSTN website once the cheque has been cleared. Tax payers can also collect the bank acknowledgement slip from the branch, once the cheque has been cleared.

What are the various payments methods for payment of GST?

Can a Non Kotak customer make GST Payment?

Yes, you can make GST payments by selecting the payment mode as Credit Card/Debit Card/UPI under E-payment mode and selecting Kotak Mahindra Bank as the payment gateway.
