Paying house rent is probably one of the biggest expenditures that you make every month. Apart from the amount being significant, even the timing of the payment is critical. A date is fixed between the homeowner and the tenant for the rent to be paid on that date each month; skipping the payment is not really an option. While we all make allowances and plan our budgets in such a way that we pay our rent on time, some unforeseen circumstances can crop up. This results in a cash crunch leaving us in a tight spot.

Some of the best credit card companies have found a solution to this dilemma. To be able to deal with such unavoidable circumstances one can use a credit card to pay the rent. Using a credit card buys us some time in the form of an interest-free short loan. If you pay your credit card bill on time, not only do you get some extra days but you also earn benefits by using credit cards for payments.

Benefits of using credit cards to pay your house rent

The first benefit of using some of the best credit cards is reward points. The more you spend, the more points you earn. These can then be redeemed for various offers or even in the form of a credit to your statement.  With a higher spend you qualify for other perks such as limit enhancements and upgrades.

Secondly, you can be exempted from certain credit card charges. Some of the best credit card companies offer an annual fee exemption if you cross a particular spending limit on the card. By paying your house rent on your credit card, you become eligible for waivers and exemptions.

Thirdly, with a faultless payment history and clearing your credit card bills on time, you can sustain a good CIBIL score. As rent amounts are quite high, you build up a good payment plan on the card.

Last but not the least, with an auto-debit option, your rent can be paid automatically, month on month. This leaves no room for any default in making the payment. You also get a credit of 45 to 60 days as your rent stays in your savings bank account.

How can you pay using your credit card?

Now that you are well versed in the benefits of paying with a credit card, you should know that the process to do so is easy. Kotak Mahindra Bank has tied up with RedGirraffe to offer its customers the RentPay facility. RentPay is a facility provided by RedGirraffe to help credit cardholders pay their monthly rents using their credit card.

  • Kotak Mahindra credit card holders must register at the RedGirraffe website to generate their RedGirraffe ID.
  • Submit certain rental details of both, your landlord and you. After the completion of the due process, you will be issued a RedGirraffe ID (RG-ID).
  • Now you can log into the Kotak Mahindra mobile app or the net banking platform.
  • Navigate to the Pay & Transfer tab, select BillPay & Recharge, choose rental payments, and then click RedGirraffe
  • Here, enter the details, select the credit card, and put in the amount
  • Once you confirm these details, the rent will be debited.

About RedGirraffe

RedGirraffe is one of the first fintech service providers that offered a rent payment feature. This is why it became the preferred credit card payment partner for some of the best credit card companies.  Their unique selling proposition is the low service fee of 0.39%+GST.

There are other options of paying house rent using your credit card as well.

Rental platforms such as No Broker and Housing.com have the option to pay rent using credit cards. The features are simple and the process is neat and easy to follow. They accept all major credit cards.

Another great option to pay house rent using your credit card is the CRED app. The CRED interface is sleek and gives the option to pay directly to UPI IDs as well. The service fee is relatively high at around 1.5%. This is a reliable option that too accepts all credit cards.

Conclusion

Even if you don’t have a cash crunch, it is advisable to use a credit card for rent payments. The benefits are immense and your reward points will outweigh the service fee. You can always check with your credit card provider what percentage of return on each spend is given as a reward. You no longer need constant reminders and both you and your landlord can enjoy a pleasant relationship.
