Starting out in your first job is both challenging and exciting! It’s your first step into an entirely new phase of life that is different from the good old school and college days. Luxuries like skipping classes, marking proxies, getting pocket monies, and being carefree, will soon become a thing of past. But that's okay, for a freedom-filled world awaits!

The first day at work is a mixed bag of emotions — excitement, thrill, enthusiasm, nervousness, anxiety... all setting in right from the first ring of your morning alarm , going all the way to your bed time. To ensure your start gets as easy and smooth as possible, here’s a guide to help you get off on the right foot in your new role:

Get the first impression right

One of the reasons why the initial days are nerve wrecking is that we all understand how important First Impression is. But worry not! You can start off with the basics by being on time, walking in sporting your best attire, and most importantly, always carrying a positive attitude, because nothing works better in getting your first impression right. A good impression in the initial days, can influence your long-term prospects.

Ask a lot of questions

That's something you learnt in school and it carries over to the real world: When in doubt, ask! Take time to understand your job profile and the working mechanics. No one expects you to know it all. Pay attention when your guide/mentor explains you the technicalities, ask questions without hesitation, and communicate openly about any concerns that you may have. It’s wise to look dim before you begin the task, than to pretend smart and spend time doing the job wrong.

Speak up

You might think it is best to sit quiet and observe people, in the starting out days. Well not so much! Being new plays to your advantage as you can look at any problem with a fresh perspective and provide innovative solutions. Let your enthusiasm to come up with solutions show through. Organisations are always on the lookout for such passionate and keen-to-contribute minds. Try and seize every opportunity, for these are the occasions that not only put you in limelight but also make provision for more opportunities in future. So never hesitate to put forth your point.

Understand the office culture

Here’s where your observational and comprehending skills come to use. Every company has a unique culture that works for them and helps in reaping better results. Take time to observe and comprehend the unwritten rules of your workplace. The earlier you understand and appreciate the culture, the sooner you’ll blend in and have a good time working. This can have a bearing on your work efficiency as well.

Work hard, but don’t stress yourself

Being your first job, it’s only understandable that your enthusiasm is at its peak and you want to excel in every task you take on. But remember in your efforts to do so, you might end up exhausting your productivity and creativity. And, this could result in more harm than good! Here are a few points to help prevent burnouts — recognize when you're overworked, take regular timeout throughout the day, always keep in mind it’s not about how much, but how well you can deliver.

Be true to yourself

Starting off at a new place, fitting in is on top of the list. As you walk in, everyone around you might appear to you as knowledgeable, experienced, brilliant and sometimes intimidating. While you take the initiative to strike a conversation, build a connect, and fit in, remember not to lose touch with your real self because you are one of a kind, and truly special.

Stick to your job

“Patience is key to success” this notion seems to be losing its hold now. Today’s insta-generation seeks quick results even when it comes to their career. While job-hopping may seem like a good solution, in reality, it takes away the possible learnings, responsibilities and growth that would come your way with time. It also gives the negative impression about the candidate being a "hopper"; and organisations generally tend keep them at bay. So try and stick to your job, and while you do so, deliver your best. At the same time, don't give up on a promising opportunity, simply because it came up a little early.

Grow your income

No matter how big or small your salary, start investing right from the initial months. Begin with basic investments like a Recurring Deposit or Fixed Deposit. Alternatively, you could even explore SIPs that allow you to start small and earn handsome returns.

So, all the very best on your first job. If you liked what you read, check out more such articles on the site.
